About Me

Hello, I'm Tim. I'm passionate about problem solving, technology, and adult learning theory. Whether it's designing a Udemy course on database design, creating a self-guided e-learning course on sales training, or facilitating instructor-led AI seminars for information workers, I enjoy delivering learning solutions that make a difference for the learner and the organization.

Methodology

My Approach

For training to work with adult learners, it has to be practical, relevant, and geared to the right skill level. I apply Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction to each course I build to ensure maximum engagement, and connect new material to the adult learner's existing framework. I also push to become as much of an expert in the topic as I can, which lets me develop rich, effective training and helps me speak the same language as subject matter experts and stakeholders.

My years in software development shape how I build. I bring an agile, iterative approach to instructional design. ADDIE is a fine framework for identifying the key phases/deliverables of the work, but I lean toward SAM, with cycles of rapid prototyping and feedback followed by cycles of rapid development and feedback, especially on larger projects.

Perspective

AI Use Philosophy

On AI, I hold two convictions:

01

Modern instructional design should use AI to streamline development wherever possible.

02

An experienced learning designer, not the AI, should take full responsibility for the learning content and strategy.

AI does its best work when the human acts as both expert and manager, using AI to augment their own capacity rather than abdicate their judgment. In practice, I partner with AI agents and agent teams to research, suggest design and layout, and generate examples, while I keep ownership of the content outlines and initial drafts.

At the end of the day, I measure success one way: the learner can do something they couldn't do before, and the organization feels the difference. That's the work I care about.
